Many search engines take a few days to a few weeks to index your website into their database, while those most popular search engines takes more than 4 weeks and sometimes even more than 8 weeks to have your website indexed (Google is an exception. It only takes 1 - 3 days to cache you site if you manually submit online with my own experience. If you website is good enough, you will be indexed in the near future.). Please wait with patience and check everyday whether your site is indexed or not.
How spider engines work?
After submitting to the search engines online, your url will be stored in a temporary database, and then the search engine will send a spider or robot in "a time" to visit your website and determine whether your website will be indexed or not. This "a time" is different based on search engines, normally Google will send its robot in the next day, while others will wait a few days, still there are some search engines will never send out a spider or robot if you are not lucky. Statistically, most major engines will spide your website in 2 weeks, while some other engine may take more than 6 weeks.
There is no guarantee that your website will be indexed by the search engines even their spiders or robots have visited your site. In most of the case, you will not receive any reply from spider engines when your site has been indexed (I never heard there is web owner received such an email) . You have to search on their page yourself.
How directory engines work?
For directories, such as open directory, free inclusion of yahoo, they depend on personnel to decide whether you will be indexed in their database. For no commercial website submission, yahoo has dozens of editors to review submitted sites. Open directory is a free directory and depends on volunteers (without pay) to review submitted sites, and you can imagine this is a long and laborious process. You shall congratulate if you find your site in open directory, but don't be panic that within one quarter your site is still not there.
How pay-per-inclusion directories work?
For pay-per-inclusion engines like yahoo, you have more chance and more fast to be indexed into their database. Normally it's 7 days, however you can get indexed within 3 days if you want to pay more.
Yahoo offers "Yahoo Express", a paid submission service for commercial sites. Pay a $299 ($600 for adult sites) non - refundable fee, yahoo will review your English - language site within one week. This fee includes a free appeal within 30 days if your site was rejected, and try submission again without additional charges.
But be noted that this a review fee, it doesn't guarantee that your site will be indexed into their database. Even accepted by their directory, this fee is an annual fee, and you have to pay $299 ($600 for adult sites) each year in future, or will be removed.
For non English language sites, you shall submit to international yahoo directory. You need to consult the local region office for the issue. In most of the case, it's easy and fast to be accepted by regional yahoo directory.
How pay-per-click directories work?
Looksmart was a pay-per-inclusion directory before April 2002, which the fee was $299/$149 to get reviewed and indexed. After that, they introduced a new scheme named LookListing Small Business.
Under the new scheme, the submission fee has been dropped to $49. And same as yahoo, this a non refundable review charge, and doesn't guarantee your site will be added into their directory. This is just like an entrance ticket, and you can't get any clicks from visitors.
After your site was accepted, you have to pay another initial minimum deposit of $150, which is refundable and fully applicable to clicks. The price is 15 cents/click, and a monthly minimum charge of $15 will be deducted from the deposit if your site receives less than 100 clicks/month.
Indexed = ranking?
Submit your website to search engines to get indexed, and how well your website rank on the search result are .
Though your website has been added into their database, there are thousands of sites will be added into the same database everyday, and there are millions of websites inside the database, then it's not strange if you site doesn't rank on the top position of the search result, and it's still not strange if you site lists in the last position if it's not good enough.
How well your website rank depends on many factors, for example link popularity, web traffic, keywords indexed, etc. Please refer to the article How to Improve Web Ranking.
Is it possible to get your website to the top position in 2 to 3 days?
To get your website ranked in the top position of the search engine is a progress, it doesn't happen just overnight. You shall know the search engine ranking algorithm, and most of them rank the list by link popularity, site traffic, etc. So to rank higher in the search result, you shall get as more as possible outside pages link to your site, and try to drive hundreds and thousands of visitors to your web. Definitely, this is not a project which can be achieved in a few days. By posting threads in every forum he can find, and by adding link to every page which allows him to do that, in one month, he got a PR 5 for his site, and ranked the first for the keywords "poweriso" in Google.
How often shall I submit my website to search engines?
For directory engines, including open directory, pay-per-inclusion such as yahoo, pay-per-click such as Looksmart, you don't need to submit again any more if you don't change the domain.
For spider search engines, such as Google, altavista, etc, if you web has been indexed, they will send their spider or robot to visit your site at a regular time, and update the changes you have made.
However we suggest you re-submit your website once per month, and don't hesitate to submit your site after making minor changes. For regular submission (once per month), we will still suggest you make small changes to your pages before doing that, since this will tell the spider that your site are well maintained.
Will my website be banned if I submit too often?
"If you submit your website too often, it will be considered as a spam and your website will be banned by the search engines.", many article will say like this.
Actually this is not true! If it's true, just running search engine submission software 24 hours from day to day, keep submitting your competitors' websites, and you will be the survivor. But don't celebrate for this, since soon your website will be closed by your competitors using the same ways.
However we don't suggest you keep submitting. Here are some general rules when submitting your website:
What to do if I changed the domain name for my website?
If you changed your domain name or your website, you need to submit your pages with new domain (including sub URLs) immediately. Or the web server will return "Server Error" or "File not Found" error message when spider or robot accessing your old URLs. When search engines update their database by sending robot to visit your website, search engines will notice the lost links and delete your pages from the database.
